The Volunteer Work Committee at the College of Nursing, University of Baghdad, continues to provide comprehensive health and humanitarian services to visitors of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), coinciding with the peak of the influx of pilgrims to the holy city of Karbala to commemorate Arba’een. The services included providing medical care, distributing water, juices, and cold beverages, and serving meals to help prevent heat exhaustion and fatigue.
The dean of the college, Professor Dr. Wissam Jabbar Qasim, emphasized that “this initiative stems from the college’s belief in its social and humanitarian role and serves to reinforce the spirit of solidarity and Husayni service,” He emphasized the mobilization of all available resources to support the medical team and provide medical supplies to ensure the best possible care for visitors, while also praising the exceptional efforts made by faculty members and student volunteers in serving the Husayni procession of devotion.
For his part, the head of the Student Activities Division, Prof. Dr. Aaid Sabah, stated that “our students’ participation in this humanitarian service reflects their strong spirit of volunteerism and sincere commitment to the nursing mission,” noting that the division was keen to organize and coordinate the students’ efforts in both medical and support roles, including providing first aid and distributing water, juices, and meals to replenish visitors’ fluids and energy, thereby helping to hone their field skills and reinforce their values of generosity.
This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals that the University of Baghdad seeks to implement, foremost among them Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by providing on-site health coverage and preventive care to visitors to ensure their safety, as well as Goal 4 (Quality Education) by giving students the opportunity to apply their nursing and medical skills in a realistic field setting, and by fostering their sense of social responsibility and volunteerism.
The medical team’s efforts received great praise from visitors, who appreciated this initiative that combined specialized medical services with Husayni hospitality, commending the significant humanitarian role played by the University of Baghdad and the faculty of the College of Nursing in serving those visiting the holy city of Karbala.
