The college of Nursing at Baghdad University defended a doctoral thesis titled: “Parents’ tolerance of risky play for their children: The mediating roles of the sensory environment and the child’s executive function, attention and emotion regulation”. The thesis was submitted by Amna Adnan Mahdi, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Wassana Juma Muhammad, in the college’s Great Hall.

The study aimed to assess the extent to which parents tolerate their children’s risky play, and how the sensory environment, executive functions (such as attention), and the child’s emotion regulation affect this interaction. The thesis examined the impact of parental tolerance on the development of these vital aspects in children.

One of the main recommendations of the study is to encourage parents to allow their children to engage in safe and risky play to support their sensory, emotional, and cognitive development in an integrated manner. This recommendation emphasizes the importance of play as an essential tool in the development of children’s life skills. It received a grade of “Very Good”.

This thesis contributes directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 3 “Good Health and Wellbeing” and Goal 4 “Quality Education”. By highlighting the importance of play in a child’s healthy development, the study provides a practical framework for promoting children’s psychological and mental health, ensuring a better future for them and contributing to building a healthy and sustainable society.
