The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Nursing, University of Baghdad, in collaboration with the Women’s Affairs Unit at the College of Pharmacy, organized a specialized workshop titled “First Aid.” Held in Isin Hall at the College of Pharmacy, the workshop was delivered by Professor Dr. Hakima Shaker Hassan and attended by Fourth-Year students, Civil Defense personnel across college departments, as well as faculty and staff members from the College of Pharmacy.
The workshop aimed to familiarize participants with the core principles of first aid and equip them with essential emergency response skills. First aid was highlighted as the initial assistance provided by an individual—whether a trained specialist or a bystander—to anyone experiencing a life-threatening condition, acute pain, or sudden illness or injury, with the primary goals of preserving life and preventing health complications until medical help arrives or the patient is transported to a hospital.
The session covered key health emergencies that students and staff might encounter on campus and presented best practices for on-site management. Topics included classifications and emergency care for various types of wounds and bleeding, alongside appropriate responses to shock. Additionally, the workshop featured a practical hands-on segment allowing participants to directly practice first aid techniques, boosting their confidence to intervene quickly and effectively during emergencies.
In conclusion, the workshop recommended promoting a culture of first aid awareness among university students and staff, hosting regular training courses in coordination with Civil Defense, and equipping all university facilities with first aid kits to enhance overall campus safety and emergency response readiness. This initiative directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by fostering health awareness, and Goal 4 (Quality Education) by upgrading the professional capabilities and practical skills of the university community.
