The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Nursing, University of Baghdad, organized a specialized workshop titled “The Role of Faculty in Curbing the Spread of Drugs in Universities,” presented by Dr. Khatam Ghazi Attia in the college’s Continuing Education Hall, The workshop was attended by a group of faculty members interested in promoting health and social safety on campus. It focused on the vital role and responsibility of universities in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, fostering a culture of prevention to protect young people, and curbing the spread of this phenomenon both within and outside the academic community.

The workshop addressed two main themes. The first reviewed the definition of drugs, the risks of their spread in the university environment, and the severe negative effects they cause on students’ academic achievement and general behavior, while the second theme focused on the comprehensive awareness-raising role of educational institutions in preventing this phenomenon, whether through educational programs, legal deterrence mechanisms, or active contributions to treatment through specialized partnerships with relevant authorities, thereby ensuring the creation of a safe and stable university environment.

The workshop concluded with a set of important recommendations that emphasized the need to instill Islamic and moral values in students, and to organize regular awareness sessions and workshops with the participation of specialists from the Ministries of Health and Interior and civil society organizations, while stressing the importance of strengthening institutional cooperation to implement early detection and preventive intervention programs. The recommendations also called for monitoring behavior on campus and establishing mechanisms to track behavioral changes and provide appropriate psychological support, as well as intensifying media campaigns through the distribution of awareness posters highlighting the health, psychological, and economic harms of drugs.

This workshop is part of a series of activities organized by the college’s Continuing Education Unit, contributing directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 on quality education, by providing a safe learning environment free from risks that threaten the future of the younger generation.
