Under the direct sponsorship and support of the Dean’s Office of the College of Nursing at the University of Baghdad, and as part of its strategic plan to improve mental health on campus, the College’s University Psychological Counseling Unit organized the “First Conference” under the theme “Promoting Mental Health Awareness in the University Environment.” The college’s main auditorium hosted this distinguished academic event, which saw the active participation of a select group of researchers and academics specializing in psychological counseling. They gathered to discuss ways to create a safe and stable university environment that supports the educational journey of both students and faculty members.
The conference began with the presentation of scientific research and working papers addressing contemporary mental health issues, followed by specialized workshops aimed at developing counseling and educational tools. The conference also showcased real-life experiences of students with counseling units, highlighting the pivotal role the college plays in providing psychological support and integrated counseling services, thereby underscoring the achievements of the Psychological Counseling Unit and reinforcing its role as a cornerstone within the academic institution
The conference’s themes and discussion sessions focused on achieving a set of core objectives, foremost among which was raising awareness of mental health among students and faculty members, while highlighting its direct impact on improving academic performance and enhancing overall quality of life. The conference also sought to reinforce positive mental health concepts by training participants in coping strategies, psychological resilience, and psychological well-being, as well as working tirelessly to reduce the social stigma associated with mental health and encouraging everyone to confidently seek specialized help within the university environment.
At the conclusion of the conference, the Deanship of the College of Nursing affirmed that this initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 on good health and well-being and Goal 4 on quality education, based on the belief that mental and emotional well-being is the true foundation for creativity and excellence. The events concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation and plaques to researchers and participants, in recognition of their scientific efforts that contributed to the success of this forum, which seeks to transform mental health into a sustainable institutional culture.
