The College of Nursing at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific workshop entitled (Alzheimer’s disease and the appropriate type of nutrition for it) on Wednesday, 6-12-2023, as part of the activities of the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Basic Sciences Branch, and in the presence of faculty and college staff. The workshop was prepared and presented by, Assistant Prof. Dr. Asmahan Adnan Abbas and lecturer Dr. Intisar Mudhafar Oudah.

The workshop aimed to introduce Alzheimer’s disease, its causes and symptoms, and there is no definitive treatment for this disease, as global statistics show the prevalence of disease, about 35 million people with Alzheimer’s disease, and studies have shown that it is more common in female than in male.

The workshop also included the second axis, which relates to the lifestyle and type of nutrition for the patients, what foods are allowed and prohibited, and the focus on nutrients related to brain health and slowing down the patient’s cognitive decline. As for eating food, the two lecturers explained the necessity of arranging special schedules for meals including the times and types of food and how to serve the food and not relying on what the patient mentions because he does not realize it.

The two lectures at the workshop recommended educating people responsible for caring for Alzheimer’s patients and developing their cognitive abilities through establishing specialized centers or electronic applications on how to care for patients and providing medical advice to patients’ families about following scientific methods of care to improve performance.

Through their interaction with the workshop, the attendees participated in the necessity of holding workshops and discussion sessions on methods of early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease for the purpose of raising awareness and avoiding infection with it.
