As part of the college of Nursing’s various community service activities and programs, students from the pediatric nursing department organized an extracurricular activity called “Community Service” on “The Correct Way to Wash Your Hands.” The activity was presented to children at Sindbad Kindergarten under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Asmahan Qasim Muhammad and Assistant Teacher Ayat Hussein Hamid.
The activity aimed to teach kindergarten children the correct and sequential steps for washing their hands with soap and water (starting with the palms, then between the fingers, then the backs of the hands, and finally the thumbs and wrists) and to encourage children to adopt healthy habits related to personal hygiene. It also highlighted the importance of washing hands thoroughly before and after eating, rubbing the eyes, or using the toilet, as these are sources of germ transmission. This activity was designed to promote a sense of social responsibility and the practical application of nursing skills among students.
The visit included a series of interactive segments designed specifically for kindergarten-aged children, including a simplified demonstration of proper handwashing steps using engaging visual aids (such as illustrations and puppets). Hands-on practice with children on handwashing steps at the sink.
This activity is a living example of contributing to the achievement of the third goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Good Health and Well-being) by spreading awareness of basic preventive health among children. It also supports Goal 4 (Quality Education) by integrating community service into the educational process, leading to the development of a health-conscious generation and nurses with a sense of social responsibility.
