The Continuing Education Unit at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Baghdad, organized a specialized scientific workshop entitled “What is Healthy Sleep?” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Asmahan Adnan Abbas and Assistant Professor Dr. Suzan Ibrahim Ali, with the active participation of teaching and administrative staff in the Continuing Education Hall at the faculty.

The workshop addressed comprehensive scientific topics, beginning with a definition of sleep from a biological and physiological perspective, highlighting its different stages, and concluding with the concept of healthy sleep and its vital importance for humans. The workshop also reviewed the indicators that indicate the quality or poor quality of sleep and determined the ideal number of hours an individual needs based on their age group, in addition to explaining the mechanisms used to measure sleep quality and efficiency.

The workshop concluded with a set of guidelines emphasizing the need to avoid short naps in front of the television to prevent nighttime insomnia and the importance of maintaining a room temperature between 21 and 22 degrees Celsius, while ensuring that the sleeping environment is free of electronic devices such as phones and computers to ensure quality relaxation. The guidelines also recommended recommendations to adhere to complete darkness or very dim lighting to stimulate the secretion of melatonin and to ensure sleep between 8:30 and 11:00 p.m. to take advantage of the peak activity of this hormone, with the need to complete personal preparations before bed and refrain from eating foods and stimulants such as tea and coffee after 7:00 p.m.

This scientific event is part of a series of activities organized by the Continuing Education Unit in collaboration with the Basic Sciences Department to promote community health awareness. This workshop embodies the college’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 on good health and well-being, by spreading a culture of prevention and developing healthy habits that ensure the physical and mental performance of , thereby contributing to building a vibrant and productive society with the foundations for long-term physical and mental sustainability.
