His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Dr. Naim Al-Aboudi, inaugurated the new nursing college at Al-Mustansiriya University. During the opening ceremony, the Minister emphasized the importance of continuing to develop medical and health education institutions in Iraq and building on the achievements made in terms of quality and international academic accreditation.
The Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Wissam Jabbar Qasim, and the Chair of the Committee of Deans of Nursing Colleges in Iraq participated in the opening ceremony. Dr. Wissam’s participation represented the academic nursing leadership in Iraq, emphasizing the leading role of the College of Nursing/University of Baghdad in guiding and unifying nursing education visions at the national level. Also in attendance were university presidents, the president of the Iraqi Academics Union, and the president of the Iraqi Nursing Union.
The Minister of Education explained that the establishment of the College of Nursing is part of the Ministry’s strategy to develop educational programs and prepare a solid workforce with the scientific competence and professional skills required to meet the needs of the health labor market in light of international quality standards.
Dr. Al-Aboudi added that the ministry and its universities are working regularly to update and develop academic and applied programs that contribute to strengthening the health sector and upgrading the skills of professional staff. He pointed out that the qualitative innovations in recent years are clear evidence of serious efforts to keep pace with changes in knowledge and development requirements.
The opening of this college is a strategic step towards achieving the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (quality education) by expanding opportunities for specialized and equitable higher education. It also directly supports the third goal (good health and well-being) by providing the health sector with nursing staff qualified to the highest international standards.
