As part of its ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between theory and practice and enhance the clinical competencies of its students, the College of Nursing at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific field trip to the Directorate of Operations and Emergency Medical Services, specifically the Emergency Medical Services Division. The trip included graduate students pursuing a Master’s students in the Pediatric Nursing track, under the supervision of a select group of faculty members from the department.
This visit stemmed from the college’s vision to prepare qualified nursing staff capable of handling emergency and critical cases with a high degree of competence. It aimed to provide students with hands-on experience of the operational mechanisms within the emergency medical services system, and to equip them with the essential skills for rapid initial patient assessment, the provision of first aid and urgent nursing interventions, and the mitigation of potential complications during the pre-hospital transport phase.
During the visit, students learned about the nature of the medical and nursing services provided inside ambulances, the advanced equipment used for resuscitation and monitoring, and the role of university-trained nurses as active members of the rapid response team and in evidence-based clinical decision-making.
The student and faculty delegation was welcomed by the Directorate’s specialized medical and nursing team, who demonstrated great cooperation by providing comprehensive explanations of the approved protocols, as well as how to handle various emergency situations—such as heart attacks, accidents, strokes, and emergency deliveries—and the process of triaging, documenting, and safely transporting patients to referral hospitals for specialized care.
These scientific activities are in line with the College’s commitment to supporting and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
