The college of Nursing at the University of Baghdad, in coordination with the Faculty of Management and Economics at the Iraqi University, organized an awareness workshop entitled “Removing Conflicts of Interest in the Context of Combating Corruption.” The workshop witnessed remarkable scientific cooperation, with presentations by Assistant Professor Dr. Iman Hussein Alwan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Nursing, and Dr. Abdul Mohsen Karim from the Iraqi University, as part of ongoing efforts to unify visions among educational institutions to spread institutional awareness and establish ethical values in academic and administrative environments.
The workshop aimed to shed light on the concept of “conflict of interest” and its various types, highlighting its serious risks to integrity and transparency in institutional work. The scientific presentation included a review of the conceptual framework of the topic, with practical examples illustrating the negative effects of conflicts of interest on decision-making and overall performance, and a discussion of the legal and administrative mechanisms adopted to limit this phenomenon, with a focus on the role of the individual and the institution in prevention, and the importance of disclosure and transparency in reducing administrative and financial corruption.
The workshop concluded with the need to continue organizing awareness-raising events due to their effective role in raising the legal and professional awareness of teaching and administrative staff, in line with the national strategy for integrity and combating corruption in higher education institutions.
The theme of the workshop is fundamentally consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), which focuses on reducing corruption and bribery and establishing effective, transparent and accountable institutions, as well as Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), which is embodied in the constructive cooperation between the University of Baghdad and the Iraqi University to exchange experiences and enhance institutional performance.
