The Human Rights Unit at the college of Nursing, University of Baghdad, organized an awareness workshop entitled “World Human Rights Day and its importance in protecting human dignity,” presented by Assistant Professor Mustafa Wajih Hussein and attended by a group of first-year students in Classroom No. 1 at the faculty.

The workshop aimed to introduce the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and highlight its historical and legal importance, with a particular focus on linking human rights concepts to nursing ethics and patient rights. The lecturer also sought to promote a culture of respect for human dignity and the rejection of all forms of discrimination within health and educational institutions, as well as to educate new students about their university rights and duties. The workshop included a detailed explanation of the basic articles of the declaration and the mechanisms for applying these standards in daily interactions, whether on campus or in the future work environment in hospitals.

The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations that emphasized the need to integrate human rights concepts into the curriculum and professional ethics, and the importance of continuing to hold seminars and workshops that promote legal and human rights awareness among students, in addition to encouraging student initiatives that support vulnerable groups in society.

This workshop comes within the framework of the college’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 4, “Quality Education,” by providing an inclusive and equitable learning environment, the sixteenth goal of “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” by promoting the rule of law and equal opportunities, and the third goal of “Good Health and Well-being,” based on the principle that the right to health is a fundamental human right.
