An introduction to the mental health nursing Department

Introduction to the Department :

The Department was established in 1967. This Department specializes in teaching subjects of psychological and mental health nursing, medical psychology, human relations, professional nursing topics, and teaching methods in the fourth stage of the four academic levels in one semester system where students learn about the behavioral characteristics of the individual and society. Students also learn how to providing nursing care for people with mental and psychological diseases and patients in psychiatric hospitals. Students are also interested in the preventive aspect of achieving psychological and mental health and maintaining the health of the individual and society .

Department objectives :

1.Describe and discuss the foundations, concepts and principles of mental health nursing .

2.Introducing community psychological care .

3.Describe the ethical and legal issues of psychiatric and mental nursing .

4.Introducing mental health nursing theories .

  1. Apply therapeutic communication and avoid non-therapeutic contact with the psychiatric patient .

6.The application of the nursing process in providing nursing service . 6

7.Describe the different types of psychological and mental disorders and the different treatment methods .

  1. Learn how to assess psychological and mental health .

9.Study the different types of psychological treatments and their advantages .

10.Changing students’ attitudes towards mental health and mental illness .

11.Recognize the patient’s role in community mental health nursing .

Scientific expertise provided by the Department :

  1. Recognize the various psychological and mental disorders.
  2. Preventive, curative and rehabilitative experiences in the field of psychological and mental health.
  3. Experiences in the field of medical psychology and how to benefit from this science in the field of health behavior of the individual, family and society.
  4. How to treat mentally ill patients and how to take care of them.
  5. Experience in the field of scientific research.

Branch activities in conferences and seminars:

  1. Participation in scientific conferences on mental and psychological health held by the Ministry of Health.
  2. Participation in the annual scientific conferences of the College of Nursing / University of Baghdad.
  3. Participation in local, regional and international conferences for mental and mental health nursing.
  4. Participation in mental health nursing workshops at the Ministry of Health.
  5. Participation in the first national scientific conference for nursing colleges in Iraq.
  6. Preparation and implementation of the scientific symposium on the social globalization of mental illness, which was held at the College of Nursing/University of Baghdad.
  7. Participation in seminars and workshops to update the curricula of nursing colleges in Iraq.
