Introduction to the Department:

This Department specializes in teaching children’s nursing in the third grade in a one-semester system, where students are introduced to the characteristics of healthy growth and development. He learned how to provide nursing care to sick children in children’s hospitals, as well as the students’ interest in the preventive measures that must be followed to maintain the health of children. This subject is taught in two parts, theoretical at (3) hours per week, laboratory at (2) weekly, and practical at (12) hours per week in children’s hospitals located in the city of Baghdad, in addition to teaching postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD) in the pediatric nursing Department.

The vision, mission, and goals of the Pediatric Nursing Department

Vision :

 

Enabling the professional (academic) nurse to improve the quality of nursing performance (knowledge and skills) for healthy and sick children from birth to adulthood and for their families.

Mission :

 

Helping the pediatric nurse identify and diagnose the needs of the executive plan and implement it, and then evaluate the results by applying a prepared curriculum that achieves the nursing objectives (preventive, curative and rehabilitative for children).

Objectives :

 

1- Improving the student’s abilities through the application of self-learning and critical thinking method in the subject of nursing care for children.

2- Providing the professional (academic) nurse with a wide range of information and skills in pediatric nursing in all areas of the health sectors.

Scientific expertise provided by the branch

The Department provides scientific expertise to many health institutions related to child care, as well as providing scientific advice through membership of scientific committees and conferences held by the Ministry of Health and its related health institutions.

Pediatric Nursing Lab

Historical Overview:

The Pediatric Nursing Laboratory was established in 2012 under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Iqbal Ghanem Ali, and Prof. Dr. Khitam Mutashar was appointed as a technical officer of the laboratory as part of the requirements for training and developing scientific and practical skills for students of the College of Nursing for graduate and primary studies in the aspect of child care in various health institutions in Iraq. The Pediatric Nursing Laboratory provides additional resources for learning nursing skills in caring for children as the laboratory operates On maintaining educational nursing procedures and determining the appropriate authorities to implement it what’s up guarantee effectiveness and to ensure the achievement of educational goals. The laboratory was moved to the new location in the Deanship of the Faculty of Nursing, first floor, on 6/4/2015 , where it was equipped with beds, toys, and advanced medical devices necessary for child care.

Vision:

 

Enable students to improve the quality of nursing performance and develop their practical skills. Prepare a cadre of graduates with a degree of scientific and practical application high in the specialties of pathogenesis and medical parasitology. The Pediatric Nursing Laboratory also works to contribute in community service by organizing lectures and conferences with the aim of raising a healthy culture For members of the Iraqi community.

The Pediatric Nursing Branch teaches (2) subjects for primary studies and (3) subjects for postgraduate studies, masters, and doctorate, as shown below. The specialized branch teachers also supervise master’s theses and doctoral theses as part of the requirements for obtaining the two degrees

Third stage / Pediatric Nursing

Chapter title:

1- Pediatric Nursing

Number of units: 9 units (3 theoretical units 3 hours, 4 practical units 12 hours, 2 laboratory units 3 hours)

Semester calendar: Theoretical subject is 3 hours per week for 15 weeks. Total 45 hours per semester / practical subject 12 hours per week for 15 weeks. Total 180 hours in each semester/lab 2 hours for 15 weeks Total 30 hours

Academic description: At this stage, the student is given a course on Pediatric Nursing to teach him how to take care of the child during his life stages from the period of breastfeeding to the end of puberty in health and disease (health, people with special needs and children with acute and chronic diseases). The focus in this chapter is on preserving the dignity of the child and improving his growth and development, even in sick cases. The student also considers the role of the family in caring for the child. Practical training focuses on healthy children as much as it does on sick children.

Semester calendar: Theoretical course is 2 hours per week for 15 weeks. Total 30 hours per semester / practical subject 6 hours per week for 15 weeks. A total of 90 hours per semester

Academic description: At this stage, the student is given the subject of growth and development by explaining the different age stages and developmental problems at different stages in addition to describing the mental, moral, emotional, social and spiritual development during the different age stages and defining the concept of growth, development and maturation and distinguishing between them as well as understanding the socio-psychological theories regarding growth And human development and finally knowing the patterns of human growth and development

Pediatric Nursing / Master’s Course:

Academic Description: This chapter provides an introduction to advanced knowledge and practice, as well as an analysis of modern pediatric nursing concepts. It generally provides care for young people in terms of clinical needs. It also helps the student to integrate knowledge with nursing procedures to ensure quality care. It also trains students in communication skills to make it able to provide a safe and supportive environment for children and their families.

Elective Course \ Child Psychology \ Master’s Degree:

Academic description: It presents the major theories and concepts to the graduate during an entire year to give a real look at the world of childhood. This study is important for the following reasons, the most important of which is to know the patterns of the child’s development in natural cases and cases that existed in difficult environments or traumatic accidents. And help them to give children and provide them with the capabilities to face abnormal situations.
