May 16—The Human Rights Unit at the School of Nursing, University of Baghdad, commemorates the National Day of Mass Graves in Iraq, which falls on May 16, to highlight the immense sacrifices and the pursuit of human justice.
This commemoration stems from the academic and humanitarian role the university plays in preserving national memory and honoring the victims of mass graves who perished during eras of dictatorship and terrorism. The Faculty’s Human Rights Unit emphasized the importance of this occasion in promoting the values of justice and citizenship, and in supporting the rights of the victims’ families, noting that the crimes committed against the innocent will remain living testimonies calling for the upholding of human rights and ensuring that such humanitarian tragedies are not repeated.
Through these awareness-raising events, the College of Nursing seeks to instill humanistic and national values in its students and staff, affirming that the mission of nursing and education is closely linked to the preservation of human dignity and legitimate rights.
) From the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: “Peace and Justice and Strong Institutions,” this commemorative and awareness-raising activity falls within the university’s efforts to achieve Goal 16, which aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice, and build effective and accountable institutions at all levels.
