The Human Rights Unit at the College of Nursing, University of Baghdad, organized a specialized workshop titled “Highlighting the Human Dimension of the Nursing Profession through World Health Day Activities,” attended by a select group of professors, staff, and students, with the aim of reinforcing the concept of “humanity in care” within the healthcare field.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness of the emotional aspect of the nursing profession and to transform care from mere medical procedures into practical steps that touch the soul, by activating effective communication skills, providing psychological support, respecting differences, and adopting “kind words” as an integral part of treatment. The workshop also highlighted the pivotal role of youth in building modern society, as they are the driving force behind innovation and development, with a focus on the concept of “the power of empathy” as the bridge linking academic knowledge and clinical healing.
The discussions emphasized that World Health Day provides a unique opportunity for university students to highlight nursing as a cornerstone of successful health systems and to translate global slogans into tangible humanitarian actions that serve the community. The workshop concluded by emphasizing that empowering young nursing graduates is an investment in change leaders and health ambassadors who possess the driving force for social reform.
The workshop produced a set of strategic recommendations, foremost among which was the need to challenge misconceptions about the nursing profession and highlight its value as a noble, specialized, and leadership-oriented profession. The recommendations also stressed the importance of harnessing the energy of young people to support the health sector in innovative ways, organizing awareness campaigns on college campuses, and holding art events and photo exhibitions that highlight the humanitarian sacrifices of nurses. The workshop also urged the launch of community initiatives to visit hospitals and honor nursing staff, while leveraging social media platforms to share inspiring stories that document the profession’s humanitarian role.
This workshop is part of the College of Nursing’s efforts to promote humanitarian values and patient rights, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of providing comprehensive healthcare grounded in human dignity.
