The Adult Nursing Department at the College of Nursing, University of Baghdad, organized a field trip to Ibn al-Qaf Hospital for Spinal Cord Injuries, which is affiliated with the Baghdad-Rusafa Health Directorate, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Waddad Kamel, as part of the college’s vision to strengthen the practical aspect of academic curricula and link theoretical knowledge with practical reality within specialized healthcare institutions
The visit aimed to familiarize participants with the health and rehabilitation services provided to patients with spinal cord injuries and to highlight the pivotal role of the healthcare team in delivering comprehensive care, thereby contributing to the development of participants’ professional and research skills
The visit included a comprehensive field tour of the hospital’s departments, during which the delegation received a detailed explanation from medical and nursing staff regarding diagnostic mechanisms, rehabilitation programs, and protocols for preventing complications of injuries such as pressure ulcers and respiratory infections, alongside in-depth scientific discussions on modern treatment methods. The visit yielded significant scientific benefits by broadening participants’ perspectives on the nature of work in specialized centers and enhancing their practical understanding of complex nursing procedures, resulting in positive outcomes in terms of acquiring high-quality field experience. The report concluded with a recommendation to continue these academic visits and support joint academic collaboration between the college and specialized hospitals, ensuring that practical expertise is leveraged to develop training and educational programs and advance the academic journey of nursing students in Iraq.
This initiative embodies the college’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, foremost among them Goal 3 on good health and well-being through improving the quality of nursing care provided to the community, as well as Goal 4 on quality education by providing field-based learning opportunities that enhance the quality of academic outcomes, and Goal 17 on forming partnerships to achieve the goals through fostering collaboration between educational institutions and the health sector
