The College of Nursing at Baghdad University: A Legacy of Deans in Service of Nursing

The College of Nursing at Baghdad University was founded as a leading academic institution dedicated to graduating highly competent nursing professionals who serve Iraqi society. Throughout its long history, a distinguished group of academics have led the college, contributing significantly to its development and elevating its scientific and educational standing.

1963-1980

The College’s journey began under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Lamaia Al-Badri, its first Dean, from 1963-1971. Dr. Al-Badri laid the foundational bricks of the college, establishing its academic and administrative cornerstones.


Continuing the Legacy

She was succeeded by Ms. Wadiea Al-Daghistani, who led the college from 1971-1974, continuing the path of development and growth. From 1974-1980, Prof. Dr. Abdul Wadood Al-Mufti took over as Dean. During his tenure, the college saw further expansion in its academic programs and student activities.

1980-1993

Prof. Dr. Wael Al-Samarrai led the college from 1980-1983, continuing to support its educational and research endeavors.


Further Leadership and Development

The period from 1983-1990 saw Prof. Dr. Hashim Al-Dhaher take over as Dean, during which he worked to strengthen the college’s standing both academically and within the community. Ms. Badia Mohammed Najib then served as Dean from 1990-1993, playing a vital role in maintaining the continuity of the educational process despite the challenging circumstances the country faced.

1993-2005

Prof. Dr. Wafika Naba Al-Nuaimi led the College for a long and fruitful period between 1993-2001, during which the College witnessed remarkable development in various fields.


Continuing Leadership

She was followed by Prof. Dr. Hamad Jandari, who served as Dean from 2001-2003, continuing the efforts to develop the College. In the period 2003-2005, Prof. Dr. Nadeem Mohammed Dhaher assumed the responsibility of Dean during a significant phase in Iraq’s history.

2005-2021

Prof. Dr. Mohammed Fadhel Khalifa led the College from 2005-2013. During his tenure, the College underwent significant development in its infrastructure and academic programs.


Subsequent Leadership

He was succeeded by Prof. Dr. Iqbal Ghanem Ali, who served as Dean from 2013-2021. She focused on strengthening scientific research and community partnerships.

2021-2023

Prof. Dr. Huda Baqir Hassan served as the Dean of the College from 2021-2023, continuing the journey of modernization and development.


Current Leadership and Recent Achievements

Currently, Prof. Dr. Wissam Jabbar Qasim has been leading the College as Dean since 2023, marking a significant qualitative leap in its trajectory. Under his leadership, the College has achieved remarkable milestones, including its entry into several prestigious global rankings, which reflects the quality of its education and scientific research. Furthermore, the College has undergone an extensive reconstruction and modernization campaign across its infrastructure and educational facilities. The College has also successfully forged important international agreements that have contributed to knowledge exchange and enhanced scientific cooperation with leading global institutions. It is noteworthy that the College has secured top positions among nursing colleges in Iraq in numerous fields, underscoring its leadership and excellence.
