Sustainable and inclusive economic growth can drive progress, create decent jobs for all, and improve living standards. It has disrupted the lives of billions of people and put the global economy at risk. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects that COVID-19 has caused a global recession as severe as that of 2009—or worse. As job losses mount, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that nearly half of the global workforce is at risk of losing their livelihoods.
