The College of Nursing at the University of Baghdad examined a doctoral dissertation titled “The Impact of Health Literacy, Social Support, and Cultural Beliefs on Self-Management Among Patients with Chronic Diseases in Rural Communities: A Mixed-Methods Study,” presented by the researcher Mohammed Mahmood Hussein, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Raad Kareem Faraj.<\/p>\n
The study aimed to evaluate levels of health literacy, social support, and cultural beliefs, while exploring the lived experiences of patients living with chronic diseases in rural settings, and examining how these intersecting factors influence self-management behaviors. The findings revealed that health literacy serves as a pivotal determinant of successful self-management, while social and community support emerged as the strongest facilitator. Conversely, specific cultural beliefs presented tangible barriers that hinder self-care practices. This dissertation marks significant academic precedence as one of the earliest Iraqi studies employing a mixed-methods design to deliver actionable, field-based insights. These insights aim to guide culturally congruent nursing interventions and support chronic care patients across Diyala Governorate and other rural regions, earning the candidate an evaluation of “Very Good High.”<\/p>\n
The outcomes of this qualitative and quantitative inquiry align closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily advancing Goal 3: “Good Health and Well-Being” by optimizing non-communicable chronic disease management and reducing secondary complications within underserved populations.
