The Human Rights Unit at the college of Nursing, University of Baghdad, organized a specialized awareness course entitled “The Role of Public Policies in Consolidating Human Rights Principles.” The joint lecture was presented by Assistant Professor Iman Hani Abboud and Assistant Professor Yusra Ihsan Daoud. The course was held in the college’s continuing education hall and was attended by a group of professors and staff<\/p>\n

The course aimed primarily to clarify the fundamental relationship between public policy and human rights, and to explain how government policies contribute to the protection and promotion of rights. It also analyzed the different roles of policies (political, economic, social, and cultural) in consolidating the principles of dignity, freedom, and equality. It also aimed to raise awareness among participants and decision-makers of the importance of integrating human rights principles into all stages of public policy-making, implementation, and evaluation<\/p>\n

The course concluded with a set of important recommendations to strengthen the human rights dimension, including strengthening the political will to integrate human rights principles into all development plans. Reviewing national legislation to bring it into line with international human rights conventions and agreements. Activating the role of oversight and accountability institutions and involving civil society in the preparation and implementation of policies. Spreading a culture of human rights through education, media, and continuous training of cadres<\/p>\n

This course is part of the activities of the college’s human rights unit and is a direct contribution to achieving more than one of the Sustainable Development Goals, namely Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, by supporting the rule of law and promoting inclusive and effective institutions. Goal 4: Quality education, through the dissemination of a culture of human rights and justice within the academic environment. Goal 10: Reduced inequalities, through the analysis of policies and their role in consolidating the principles of equality and dignity for all<\/p>\n
